Rainy days

We hosted our second workshop of the year at Castle Howard last weekend.

The weather was less than optimal but we still got out there and concentrated on depth of field initially before moving on to composition in the second half of the workshop.

Despite the weather, the group got some good shots and enjoyed the experience of having the grounds largely to themselves.

John Regan was kind enough to send over a couple of the images which he took on the day.

Our next session at Castle Howard will be an afternoon session on the 30th of September. We also have an afternoon session at Scamptson Walled Garden on the 14th of October.

Scampston Hall and Walled Garden

Saturday had me heading out for the second photography workshop of the year. This time, it was at Scampston Hall and Walled Garden.

We had a lovely mixed group of enthusiastic photographers who wanted to learn more about how to use their camera effectively. We discussed the basics of aperture and composition. We used some filters to explore the possibilities of longer exposures as well.

We had a good explore but there was plenty more to look at, even after 3 hours. Having the garden to ourselves first thing was also a lovely experience.

Photography day

We had a good day out on our first morning session of the year. The weather was mixed with some sun, some cloud and a little rain. We did get plenty of shots of daffodils, rhododendron and of course, Castle Howard.

Students picked up tips on composition and some of the technical aspects of working their camera. We got someone from always shooting on auto to always shooting on manual in the space of a couple of hours.

Day by day

We are gearing up for what we hope will be a glorious summer in Yorkshire. Our new adverts have been printed and are ready to go out. We are also now featured on the What’s On, page of Castle Howard website and also some local cottages too. Gardeners World returned on Friday so it must be spring.

As well as planning our workshops we will also be getting the allotment ready and visiting a few gardens including old favourites and some new surprises too.

Sunset Cottages

We had a lovely meeting with the owners and operators of Sunset Cottages at the weekend and are pleased to announce that we will be running photography workshops with them over the coming months.

The garden is a labour of love, created out of an empty paddock over 50 years. It is still evolving and changing. It was part of the open gardens scheme for many years and as keen gardeners and photographers, it offers plenty of options.

The gardens are for the use of the guests but generally we will have the run of it which should make this a lovely day out.

You can visit their site here.

Dates for events will be added to our schedule shortly. We will also be running ad hoc sessions on a 1 to 1 or small group basis, depending on your requirements.
